HSG News! March 2015

HSG families,
Lots of GOOD NEWS to share!

After a false start to the beginning of the year, I believe I've found a helper! Please welcome my 15 year old son, Ryan, as our new HSG Junior Administrator. He will be helping with event coordination, Facebook and blog posts, and other administrative tasks.

One of Ryan's first tasks was to pair up those of you participating in the HSG Secret Mama Pals exchange. If you completed your questionnaire, you should have received an HSG email earlier today. His help meant I could participate too!

HSG Homeschool Movie Day 2015 ~ DisneyNature's Monkey Kingdom was announced today! We have a small window of time to take advantage of group discount pricing so DON'T DELAY!

If your family is looking for community service opportunities, please consider serving at the upcoming Joni and Friends event, Sometimes Miracles Hide.

Blessings,
Tika Weeks

Community Service Op

Opportunity for "Teen" Service: The Pregnancy Care Center is holding their annual Fundraising Gala October 23, 24 & 25, and they need young adult volunteer servers, preferably ages 14-19 (they've been known to take mature 12 year olds). This is a good opportunity for your young adult to serve the community, hear a great speaker & accrue volunteer hours for their transcript/resume. What? You say your student does not volunteer their time for others? Now is the time to start! Show them how to be a well-rounded individual by encouraging (requiring?) them to serve others. This is a huge plus on their high school transcript and/or resume. Contact the GP PCC to sign up. http://gppregnancy.com/

Community Service Op [Grants Pass]

Hey all! There is a program starting that I was asked to share with you all. It is called Concerned Youth and it is a new organization aimed at helping kids from 12-18 become active & productive members of our society by doing community service type projects. It will be supervised by local youth pastors from different churches, but parents are always welcome to stay. The initial kick off is May 3rd, time to be determined, where the kids and adults will start at dutch bros on 6th street and 'march' down 6th and back up 7th streets where they will be doing good deeds along the way {such as picking up garbage, etc.}. Joe Chandler, who heads this up, would like to see this first march have TONS of kids participating. You can call him @ 541-295-1546 for additional info. I can personally vouch for Joe, as his daughter and I have been best friends since 6th grade and he is an active member/establisher of the homeless teen events throughout town. A website is being built at concernedyouth.org

Judges Needed for Upcoming Speech & Debate Tournament!

Tika

The Clarion Forensics Speech and Debate Club is excited to announce that we are hosting the Clarion Qualifier for Region II of the National Christian Forensics and Communications Association! This tournament will host competitors from around our multi-state region. Top competitors from this tournament will be qualified to compete at the Regional tournament in May. This three day event will be in Medford, Oregon from March 1-3. We invite you to help make this event possible as a community judge. No experience in debate or judging is needed. We would be honored to have you participate as a judge in this event.

The National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA) is the third largest high school speech and debate league in the nation, comprised of home educated middle and high school students from 44 states. For more information, please visit: http://www.ncfca.org/ .

This is the last of several qualifying tournaments that will be held around our region. We can only provide this opportunity to students with the participation of many community, parent and alumni judges. We will provide an essential, but relatively brief, non-technical, orientation for you on the day you choose to judge at the tournament. We have a team that will be providing food and beverages for our judges throughout each day.

This event will include 10 speech events and 2 types of debate. On the judge registration page, you will be able to mark the time slot you are available to judge and whether you would like to judge speech or debate. Of course, we would love to have you judge more than one event, but are very happy if you can come to judge even one event. We think you will enjoy watching these student presentations. You should expect that judging one round, including an orientation and time to complete your ballot will take 2 – 2 ½ hours. The judge registration page will instruct you about the arrival time for the round you choose to judge.

To accept our invitation to judge please link to the following page:

http://www.ncfca.org/

Once you are on that page, please select the far right tab that says “judges”, on the next screen, you will click on the portion of the US Map for our region (the red Region II). From there, you will select the Clarion Qualifier and then be able to complete your registration and select your judging time.

Location: Bethel Church
4245 Vista Pointe Drive
Medford, OR 97524

Thank you for considering your participation as a judge.

If you have questions about judging or have difficulty with the registration process, please contact Steve Moore, judges@clarionforensics.com or 541-830-8047.

If you need to contact someone on the day of the tournament, please contact our Judge Greeter, Kathy Mikels at 541-218-0160.
