HSG Field Trip of the Oregon Caves 5/31

Please mark your calendars for 10am on Thursday, May 31st to tour the Oregon Caves! They have offered us a group rate of  $4.00 per person for those 16 years and under (but taller than the required 42" in height!) and $6.00 per person for those 17 years and older, but space is limited. (Please note: this is not the educational field trip we had originally hoped for, but still a great educational opportunity to tour the Oregon Caves!)

Planetarium Field Trip

North Medford High School Planetarium Field Trip for Home-Schoolers.  

Tuesday, April 10, 2012,  Noon.  !st grade and up accompanied by a parent.  Please, no one under 6 years old and not afraid of the dark.  (requested by Mr. Black, planetarium teacher).   Maximum of 65 people, this includes adults.  Pre-registration is required.  Register with Laura Hreha by March 20th , 2012.  You can email Laura ,

If you email me and I don't respond within a couple days, please phone me instead.  Sometimes my email filter does not send new addresses through to my junk box.   The planetarium cost is $80.00.  The price per family will depend on the number of families that sign up and maxes out the 65 people limit.  Laura will let you know the cost per family after the March 20 deadline for registration via email.  Then I will need the money by March 31.  If twenty families  sign up the cost would only be $4.00 per family.   A great price for a wonderful show

I don't really know how we could rally the homeschool troops so to speak, but it is an interesting idea. Also they offer field trips through their place complete with ultra sound machine...."

I am in the midst of planning for field trips, classes and activities for The HS Gathering. It would be helpful for me to know a few things first. I appreciate you taking the time to give me some feedback and letting me know if you are available to help in any way.

1. Would your family attend a field trip to the Oregon Caves this spring?
2. If so, which program would you prefer to attend (follow links for more info):
   Geology: Our Changing Earth, 3rd-5th grades or

3. Would your family be interested in a field trip of:
   a local television or radio station?
   Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport & a historic KC-97 Stratofreighter?
   Medford's National Weather Service station?

4. Would your family be interested in a 4-week science class on chimpanzees, leading up the the release of DisneyNature's Chimpanzee movie in April? Read more here.

6. What does your family look for in regards to FAMILY ACTIVITIES within the homeschool community? Where do you find these opportunities?

HSG- Crater Lake Field Trip, Fri Oct 14th

HSG- Crater Lake Field Trip, Fri Oct 14thA field trip to Crater Lake National Park has been planned for October 14th!
Some of the topics covered include geology, watersheds, and plant and animal adaptations. This ranger-led program is geared for students 4th grade-8th grade, but the Park Ranger Education Coordinator was happy to work with our "multi-age" group to bring all school-aged children*. The older students students will have the opportunity to lead us through a GPS earthcaching segment.

This is a FREE field trip and park admission is waived for our group. We can make arrangements to carpool up there, as/if needed.

To participate, I must have the following information ASAP:

YOUR PHONE NUMBER

*Younger siblings are welcome to join our group, however they must be able to walk with the group (please don't depend on strollers, as the rangers can not guarantee that all areas will be accessible).

We are able to have a maximum of 30 students (including siblings) and must have at least 6 parent-leaders available when we divide into groups. These would be parents without younger children to attend to, so please let me know if that is something you can help with:)

HS'ers w/grades 4-8th: Are you interested in a Sept or early Oct field trip to Crater Lake? We would have the opportunity to spend the day with a park ranger learning about the region and it's unique characteristics. This would be FREE to participation families, including park entrance. A Dolphin's Tale movie (HSG group rate info update)

For those of you interested in seeing A Dolphin's Tale, I contacted Tinseltown to find out if they would be showing the movie and if we could get a group rate for our homeschool group. I heard back from the manager today and he informed me that they don't get confirmation of film bookings until the Monday or Tuesday prior to a film's release (in this case, Sept 19th or 20th). I will follow up with this again when we get closer to the release date! In the meantime, please mark your calendars (*tentatively*) for Tuesday, September 27th.

I also inquired about a possible field trip of Tinseltown "behind the scenes". I would like to get an idea of how many would be interested in doing these, so either reply below or email hsgathering@gmail.com.
