Field trips, classes & more, Oh my!

Dear Homeschool Families,
I am in the midst of planning for field trips, classes and activities for The HS Gathering. It would be helpful for me to know a few things first. I appreciate you taking the time to give me some feedback and letting me know if you are available to help in any way.
Thank you & God bless!
Tika Weeks
The HS Gathering

  1. Would your family attend a field trip to the Oregon Caves this spring?
  2. If so, which program would you prefer to attend (follow links for more info):
Geology: Our Changing Earth, 3rd-5th grades or
Watersheds: Through the Mountain and to the Valley, 6th-8th grades
  3. Would your family be interested in a field trip of:
a local television or radio station?
    Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport & a historic KC-97 Stratofreighter?
    Medford's National Weather Service station?
    Jackson County Library?
  4. Would your family be interested in a 4-week science class on chimpanzees, leading up the the release of DisneyNature's Chimpanzee movie in April? Read more here.
  5. Would your family (especially your daughters) be interested in classes on:
    basic sewing?
    gardening?
    cooking?

  6. What does your family look for in regards to FAMILY ACTIVITIES within the homeschool community? Where do you find these opportunities?
  7. Are you interested in a book or curriculum swap in February (can't wait for the Used Curr sale in June?) or a one-time "FOR SALE" bulletin going out the the homeschool community?
Any additional thoughts, ideas, or suggestions for HSG are greatly appreciated! Thank you!!!

Prayer Request for local hs family

This prayer request came in for a local homeschool mom:

"I have a prayer request for a family in our homeschool community.  My sweet friend "L."  has seven children and still homeschools four of them.  They are an absolutely amazing family who is in need at this time.  Her husband left the family in July without any financial support.  She has been actively looking for work but has no income.  My husband is going to talk with both of our pastors soon to discuss the possibility of setting up a fund for them.  I’ll share more details later.  In the meantime, please keep them in prayer for their needs to continue being met and protection.  The Lord has miraculously provided for them even without income.  This time of year is so difficult for those suffering."

Thank you for your prayers for this family!

Fundraisers for Sarah Armstrong

FUNDRAISER #1 FOR

SARAH ARMSTRONG

The “Lighthouse Speech and Debate Club” (this is a

homeschool group) is hosting a benefit fundraiser

for Sarah Armstrong, a long time home school mom

of 4 boys. She has been fighting for her life, in the

battle against cancer. This has created some financial

hardships. We as a Christian club and body want to

come alongside her in the fight. So we are hosting a

performance night. There will be a raffle(s) (hoping to

get things donated from the community), local musicians,

skits and more. This be held at CORNERSTONE

CHRISTIAN CHURCH on November 11, 2011 at 7:00

p.m. We are acting in faith that we will have a packed

event. We have printed over 1,000 tickets to sell. The

cost is $3.00 (which includes 1 raffle ticket). 10 and

under are free. Extra raffle tickets are 2.00 each. Our

businesses that have donated so far are: Rooster’s

Restaurant, Good Bean Coffee Co., Bear Creek Golf,

R & D Sandwiches, Cold Stone Ice Cream. Please

pray for this event, that it will truly be a blessing for

this family. Pray that we are blessed with an outpouring

of people who are moved to donate and come

alongside us. For more information contact Kerrie at

k.j.cochran05@gmail.com.

FUNDRAISER #2 FOR

SARAH ARMSTRONG

The Hope for Sarah Benefit: Dinner * Auction * Concert

will be held on Saturday, November 19 at the Senior

Center on 520 E. River Street in Cave Junction. A pasta

entree, fresh salad, and garlic bread will be served at

5:30. Purchase dinner tickets in advance for $12 each,

which are also good for door prizes at the event.

You do not need to attend the dinner to attend the

event. After dinner there will be a live auction, which

will include many nice art pieces, antiques and more. In

addition, raffle tickets will be sold for a quilt and there

will be a silent auction. Sarah’s sister Libby Goines and

Tim & Michelle will perform in concert after the auction,

and desserts will be on sale individually.

All proceeds will go toward the Armstrong family to

support medical expenses. This event is a labor of love

of the Takilma Bible Church and friends and family

of Sarah. Contact Starlite Robinson 541-592-2517 or

Bobbie Blakely 541-592-2813 for more information,

to donate time or auction items, or to purchase a dinner

ticket or raffle tickets for the quilt. Dinner tickets

may also be purchased in Cave Junction at Dillon’s

Nursery and Treehouse Florist & Gifts.

TEACH meeting in Grants Pass

November TEACH Meeting meets @ River Valley Community Church

This month's meeting will feature a presentation by Joyce Herzog a noted homeschool speaker and long time educator. She will be answering questions via Skype after we view the presentation. Here's her topic.

Learn to Teach and Engage ALL Ages in Learning!

...

What does “good teaching” look like? How can you do it with many children of different skill levels and be sure everyone is progressing at their own level? How do you get an 11 year old boy and a 12 year old girl both interested in studying “worms?” It is possible. Learn from an expert with over three decades of teaching experience! It’s easy. It’s fun. It’s effective learning!

We'll meet at River Valley Community Church, Family Center A, 405 NE 6th Street , Grants Pass.

7:30 PM on Thursday November 3rd.

Bring a friend and pass it on!

Colonial Dancing

Dancing in colonial times was a social event- a chance to talk to neighbors, to discuss politics or exchange homemaking ideas. New people in town were introduced at a ball. The act of dancing with someone new was a form of welcome and a non-threatening way to get to know someone. It gave young men practice in gentlemanly behavior and provided a safe venue for socializing.

The Liberty Tree Dance group was started 3 1/2 years ago to introduce Colonial dancing to the Rogue Valley. We meet every 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month at 6 pm at the Evergreen Ballroom. Colonial Dance is great for all ages. No experience is required just a willingness to learn and a sense of humor.

Fencing Classes

IT’S FENCING TIME!
Fall term fencing in Medford begins on Monday,
September 12. We are starting a couple of weeks earlier
this year in response to fencers’ requests. The term
will last for thirteen weeks instead of the normal eleven
(until December 9). The classes and schedule will be
essentially the same as last Winter and Spring. The
foremost differences are greater emphasis on electric
fencing in the saber class, and the afternoon electric
foil class will focus on youth rather than on beginning
electric foil fencers.
Introductory classes will continue to be offered Mondays
and Wednesdays -- 3:30-4:15 p.m. for children and 5:45-
6:45 p.m. for all ages. Unrelated to the extended term,
most class fees will be increased by $10 for the term.
Introductory and saber classes will cost $80 for the
13-week term; standard foil and the youth competitive
foil classes will cost $110 for the term. Fencers receiving
scholarships should expect the scholarship to be
adjusted on a prorated basis.
