IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT from HSG

IMPORTANT MESSAGE from HSG:
As many of you know, the HS Gathering was established several years ago as a communication resource to support our Southern Oregon homeschool families. There have been countless field trips, Mom's Nights (aka, Gatherings), classes and workshops, and community events and activities announced both here and on our Facebook page. Last spring, HSG launched the HSG Homeschool Curriculum Swap & Re-Sale, a HUGE hit for Facebook users! And don't forget our 1st "in person" Used Curriculum Sale earlier this year.

My friends, this has been a labor of love! It has truly been an honor to serve the homeschool community through this ministry. That being said, I have prayed for months now for guidance on how to go forward with HSG that is compatible with changes in my own family. I firmly believe that the time has come to "pass the baton" to another family.

Prayer request- Please pray that another family will come forward soon to continue the work of HSG. If another is not found soon, I'm afraid HSG will be no more. Please prayerfully consider if that might be you! I am absolutely available to answer any questions as to what this would entail.

May God's will be done here now and forevermore!

Blessings to you all,
Tika Weeks
Administrator for the HS Gathering

Attn: Grants Pass Homeschoolers!

from James Art Ville:

"The Grants Pass Library has provided an alert system to notify home-schoolers of upcoming events and specials. This will likely take the form of emails being sent. However, it seems like they won't roll it out until they have more people sign up. This is that they sent to me:

Hello,
I will add you to my list. So far, my list is quite small and has not reached the point where it’s worth sending much out. If you could help build it, and get people to send me items to share, that would be wonderful!

Thanks,

In order to sign up requires sending an email to: kdwyer@JosephineLibrary.org with the subject line of "HOMESCHOOL ALERT SIGN-UP"

This would be an amazing resource for my family, and we need your help to make it worth their time and effort. Please consider signing up. Thank you."

Apple Pie Day at the Victory Rally [Medford] 10/3

Apple Pie Day in Medford?!

Apple Pie Day is an event that occurs every other year at the Capitol in Salem; it's an opportunity for home schooling families to meet their legislators, and for the legislators to meet the fine families they are representing.

This Friday, we have an opportunity to meet many of the candidates in this 2014 election right here in Medford. Bring your family to the Victory Rally at the Commons from 5-8pm, meet some folks, introduce yourselves as home schoolers. When our newly-elected legislators are in Salem, we want them to remember our faces and the values we hold dear.

Community Service Op

Opportunity for "Teen" Service: The Pregnancy Care Center is holding their annual Fundraising Gala October 23, 24 & 25, and they need young adult volunteer servers, preferably ages 14-19 (they've been known to take mature 12 year olds). This is a good opportunity for your young adult to serve the community, hear a great speaker & accrue volunteer hours for their transcript/resume. What? You say your student does not volunteer their time for others? Now is the time to start! Show them how to be a well-rounded individual by encouraging (requiring?) them to serve others. This is a huge plus on their high school transcript and/or resume. Contact the GP PCC to sign up. http://gppregnancy.com/

OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT HOMESCHOOLING: The November elections are fast approaching. Announcement from Shoestring Productions

Greetings from Shoestrings,               With summer quickly coming to a end, and September approaching us faster and faster, this brings a wealth of changes: The weather gets cooler, school starts back up, and a new year of drama begins. With the new drama year there also comes with it, new changes. This letter is to inform everyone on the changes that are taking place here at Shoestrings.               The biggest change that is taking place is that the former director Jeannie, is stepping down as director. She will still be a part of Shoestrings as a consultant, and as an overall volunteer. The new director will be Stephen Camden along with his wife Ashley, who has been involved in Shoestrings for more than fifteen years. Over the past few years he has been assistant director to Jeannie as well as the technical director. This leads into the next biggest change, there will be NO fall production this term. As the new director of Shoestrings, Stephen wants to change things up a bit and focus on other parts of theater and not just acting. This fall term will consist of class time every week, where each week we will focus on different parts of theater. Everything from acting, sound and lighting, set design, as well as script writing and analysis. There will also be take home projects and homework. In the spring there will be a production so that the kids can put everything they have learned into practice, and put on a great production. Because there will be no production fall term there will not be a opportunity to sell ads. This brings us to the last change here at Shoestrings, the cost of tuition. We have new expenses that we have not had in the past. The newest would be the cost of storage and insurance. In the past we have had our storage paid for, but that is no longer the case. The new tuition for this term will be $190, with a shrinking rate for each child after the first. This cost will cover storage and all other overhead expenses we have. Payment arrangements can be made. The last change that will be taking place is that we will require a parent or family member of a student to be there every week and stay for the whole duration of class. There will be a sign up sheet on the first day of drama that you can sign up for any date you would like. Also all parents are always welcome to stay every week. If a parent is not signed up for a certain date, drama will not be happening on that day.   All parents, of both new and old students, are required to attend the first meeting on the ninth. This is a oration day, where will go over all changes in more detail, as well as answer any questions you might have. After orientation feel free to stay as the students play theater games and get to know each other.   Drama will be starting on Tuesday instead of Thursday, beginning September 9th at 1:30pm to 4:30pm every Tuesday at West Main Church. We hope to see you all there.   If you would like more info please feel free to contact Stephen at:   Cell: 541-621-0148   Email: shoestring_theatrical_troupe@yahoo.com

YOU'RE INVITED :)

Living Lessons: Learning from Everyday Life and the Occasional Field Trip
Thursday, September 4 at 7:00pm
River Valley Church 405 NE Sixth Street, Grants Pass OR, Family Center A

Wondering how to get the most out of your homeschooling experience? Lessons don't have to begin and end sitting around the kitchen table. Thankfully, homeschooling is a lifestyle that allows for learning opportunities wherever you go. Learn to expand your classroom to the world around you! Plus, you'll also learn how to plan a field trip from start to finish.

Tika Weeks, of The HS Gathering of Southern Oregon, homeschools her 2 boys and has taught classes and workshops to children and adults for over 20 years. Local Educator Discounts

HSG families,

Hopefully you know that there are many businesses here in Southern Oregon that offer Educator Discounts to homeschool parents. Sometimes you'll need "proof" and others just for requesting it, but either way it's good to take advantage of these special offerings. Not only does it offset our expenses as homeschoolers, but it lets the businesses know that we are loyal customers to those that recognize our teacher status!

Here is the list I have of businesses we have here locally, plus a few available online:

SCHOOL SUPPLIES (including Arts & Crafts)
  • Office Depot offers teacher discounts and rewards via their Star Teacher Rewards program.
  • Staples gives 5-10% back in teacher rewards, depending on the purchase.
  • FedEx(Kinkos) saves teachers 15% on qualifying purchases and printing.
  • Jo-Ann Craft & Fabric Stores gives teachers 15% all purchases (more on select events).
  • Michaels offers 15% savings to teachers every day.
BOOKS & MEDIA
ELECTRONICS & SOFTWARE
  • The Apple Store is very generous with their student and teacher pricing. (online)
  • Adobe Software offers discounts on products like Photoshop and more! (online)

OTHER DISCOUNTS
Walmart & Target offer once a year Teacher Appreciation Days. Check their websites for the next dates.
Dutch Bros gives free coffee drinks to teachers on Teacher Appreciation Day ;)

Of course there are many more not listed, so feel free to comment below and I'll add them to our list!
What is your favorite local business offering and Educator Discount?

ADMIN: Thank You

Dear HSGathering families,

I just have to take a minute to share this note with you. It's not often I receive a thank you note for the time I put into maintaining the HSG website, Facebook pages, answering questions and emails, and planning events, activities, and Gatherings, but today I did 😊

For those of you that don't already know, the HS Gathering of Southern Oregon is a "one-(wo)man show", with the occasional assistance from my small family. Anything you see posted here was planned by ME for YOU, emailed directly to me from folks just like you, OR it was gleaned from one of several sources I turn to regularly looking for activities "of interest" to local homeschool families. I require no membership fees and I charge no advertising fees. What does that mean? That means it's FREE to you and I don't receive a dime 😊 My little labor of love 💜

And THAT, my friend, is why this little thank you note is so valuable to me!

God bless you all as you are planning and starting your new school year!

In Christ,
Tika Weeks

Our ballroom dance class has room for a few more dancers. High school Classic Lit Discussion Group

From Lynn Barton:

I am working on putting together a group of high schoolers to read and discuss some of the classics of literature next year. One of the best ways to engage high schoolers in learning is to get them talking with each other about what they are reading. I have been a Classical Conversations tutor for the last four years and I have seen the value of this in grounding students in the truth, growing in understanding of themselves and others, and the difference knowing the Lord makes in our broken world. Our CC class will not continue next year, but I would like my daughter to have another year of talking about great ideas. We will be meeting Wednesday mornings 9 to 11 AM, starting in September. If you have a high schooler (14 years old and up) and are interested in learning about the book list and what we will be doing please email me or call me at 535-8065. Thank you! Lynn Barton

My Top 5 Ways to save money at the Jackson Co fair!

My updated list for 2014!

Looking for ways to save money at the fair? Here's my TOP 5 LIST:
#5~ PARKING
Regular parking fee: $4 at the fairgrounds
SAVE by parking for FREE at Crater High School and taking the shuttle over for $1/person (roundtrip). Of course, this is only a savings for groups of less than 4. Large family? Go ahead and park at the fairgrounds for $4/vehicle.
Parking at the fair is now FREE on FRIDAY (7/18) thanks to the Coquille Indian Tribe, and The Mill Casino

#4~ RIDE TICKETS
Regular price for ride tickets is somewhere around $1 each and you usually need between 3-5 tickets per ride, if I'm not mistaken. (We don't do a lot of rides, if any, when we go.)
SAVE by buying an all day unlimited rides wristband for the earlybird price of $25 (at the fair, it's $30), available at the fair office, Sherm's Thunderbird, or Food 4 Less. Looking to save more? Skip the rides all together! There's still plenty to see and do :)

#3~ FOOD
Fair food is a wide variety of overpriced fried "delicacies", but if you're like my family, there's that one treat you look forward to each year.
SAVE by eating a full meal at home! Keep your eyes open for the FREE water cups available to stay hydrated.  And when the time comes, only buy that "must have" treat...and share it! (Not recommended for ice cream cones, if that's your thing!)

By the way, if you want French fries, the basket of fries in the food court is a HUGE amount for 4 people to share and only a couple bucks. Just grab plenty of napkins!

#2~ ADMISSION
Regular adult admission: $10 per day
*NEW THIS YEAR*Kids 12 & Under: FREE!!
Seniors (Ages 62-74): $6
Ages 75 & Over: Free
Sunday is FREE Admission for everyone!
The good news is they are offering Pre-Fair tickets fir only $9, available at the Fair Office, Food 4 Less, and Thunderbird.
For my family of 4, with only one "child", that means $27-30 right at the gate (plus the $4 to park!). If you have a larger family or plan to spend all day, this will eat up your funds real fast!
Which leads me to...

My #1 way to save money at the fair-
be a part of the fun!
GET A FREE ADMISSION TICKET by entering an open class exhibit! Children under 17 have to enter a minimum of 1 junior open class exhibit to get their FREE admission ticket, adults must enter at least 3 to get theirs. But HURRY! You only have until 5pm this Friday, June 27th to get your ENTRY FORM turned in!

Feel free to share YOUR tips for saving money at the fair!

Classical Conversations Practicum

Classical Conversations Practicum

Please join us for an Information Meeting on May 19th @ 6:30pm at Cornerstone Christian Church, 608 N Barlett, to learn more about Classical Christian education and how Classical Conversations can equip you to home school your children. This exciting program combines a Biblical worldview with classical tools for Pre-K to 6th (Foundations/Essentials) and 7th to 12th (Challenge). Please RSVP by phone or email to Stacey Christian at staceyccmom@gmail.com or 541-821-3914.

Classical Conversations is also offering a free 3-day conference for parents on classical, Christian home schooling. Join veteran home schooling parents for three days of encouragement and inspiration as we seek to understand the classical model and learn how to apply it in Christian homeschooling. Practicums have been called, “…a pep rally, a Bible study, and a college course.” We hope you’ll find the encouragement and enrichment that helps you get started homeschooling and keeps you going all the way through high school. This year we will be digging deeper into understanding the art of rhetoric which is misunderstood today, but is a powerful tool not just in school, but also in the “real world”. Rhetoric has founded nations, excited revolutions, and negotiated peace. It has ushered in great awakenings, and lulled babies to sleep. Join us this summer as we figure out what rhetoric really is and how our children can become masters of it and not slaves to it. While you learn, your children learn, too! Economically-priced day camps are available for students of all ages. Your students are sure to enjoy the group learning environment, whether they are being cared for in our nursery; playing and singing in our play camps; memorizing and drawing God’s world in our geo-drawing camps; or learning about language, writing, science, logic, debate or public speaking in our academic camps for older students. Advance registration for student camps is required. Please register online at classicalconversations.com.

Summer Science with Steve Holst!

Wonders of Science Summer Camps

We had such a great time last year with a camp for 6-13 year olds that we are adding a camp for older students, or for those who are ready for more challenging labs, yet still with tons of fun demonstrations.

Science Camp 1 is much of the same material we covered last year - Polymers, Density, Atomic Structure and Chemistry, Air Pressure/Flight and Rockets.

Science Camp 2 (ages 10-15)  will have topics such as Chemistry, Geology, Biology, Light/Electricity and Magnetism, and Physics.  Our last day will be spent assembling and then firing off C-engine rockets.

Each camp is filled with exciting  demonstrations and hands-on science.

The location will again be Madrone Trail Charter School on Ross Lane in Medford for the week of June 16 - 20th.   If there is enough interest in Grants Pass we would love to do a camp there sometime in July, but right now are not planning on it.  You can find more info at the website -www.livingwatershomeschoolcourses.com

Our goal with the camps is to light a fire in the hearts of children to delight in studying God's creation.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Community Service Op [Grants Pass]

Hey all! There is a program starting that I was asked to share with you all. It is called Concerned Youth and it is a new organization aimed at helping kids from 12-18 become active & productive members of our society by doing community service type projects. It will be supervised by local youth pastors from different churches, but parents are always welcome to stay. The initial kick off is May 3rd, time to be determined, where the kids and adults will start at dutch bros on 6th street and 'march' down 6th and back up 7th streets where they will be doing good deeds along the way {such as picking up garbage, etc.}. Joe Chandler, who heads this up, would like to see this first march have TONS of kids participating. You can call him @ 541-295-1546 for additional info. I can personally vouch for Joe, as his daughter and I have been best friends since 6th grade and he is an active member/establisher of the homeless teen events throughout town. A website is being built at concernedyouth.org

Dear HSG Families,

My boys and many of their friends will be participating in this tournament and we need more judges ASAP! I know it's spring break for some of you, but if you could take a look at your schedule and see if you can come for 3 hours, we would be honored to have you! :)
Thank you in advance for your consideration,
Tika Weeks

The National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA) is holding a speech and debate tournament, hosting competitors from Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. The event will be held March 27-29 at Cascade Christian High School in Medford, Oregon.

Community judges are a crucial component to the success of the tournament. A first-time judge at a recent tournament commented, "I am having a TON of FUN! The quality of presentation and debating is amazing. I'll be back!"

To register as a judge, click here or go to www.ncfca.org and click "Judges" at the right of the red menu bar. Select the red "Region II" portion of the map, and then "Southern Oregon Qualifier" in Medford, Oregon. Enter your contact information and select the round(s) you wish to judge. It's very simple!

If you have questions about judging or the registration process, please contact me directly :) We look forward to seeing you at the tournament!

Q & A with Colonel Dave Dotterrer:  An Invitation for Homeschoolers

Q & A with Colonel Dave Dotterrer:  An Invitation for Homeschoolers

When:  Thursday, March 20th, 6:30pm
Where:  Republican Headquarters, 311 E. Main St. (downtown Medford)
What:  An opportunity for parents and students to ask questions of
Col. Dave Dotterrer, and represent the homeschooling families of Southern Oregon

At the Pro-Life Rally in downtown Medford this past January, I met Colonel Dave Dotterrer, who will be running for State Senator in this 2014 election.  I was grateful that Col. Dotterrer was present on that very chilly day, supporting the sanctity of life. I wondered what his views were on homeschooling, and if this was a candidate I could vote for in the coming elections. With this in mind, Nicholas (my son) and I decided to host a meeting with Col. Dotterrer, so that the homeschooling families in our area would have an opportunity to get to know this candidate, and to voice their concerns and questions.

As a parent with an interest in the future of homeschooling in Oregon, I am thankful to have the opportunity to personally engage in conversation a public servant who may be representing my family and the interests of my community at the Capitol. It is also important to give our young people the opportunity to be involved in the political process of our nation, voice their concerns, and be representatives of their generation. We encourage students to attend the meeting and ask questions of Col. Dotterrer.

Please join us and invite other homeschooling families as well.  We hope to see you there!

Veronika Comerchero and Nicholas Comerchero

Host housing needed

From Lorrie Walker:

Greetings!
An amazing group of over 100 homeschool students is coming to town for a speech and debate tournament March 26th-30th.  We are in need of volunteer families to help house some of them, since we will have competitors from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and California. Mostly, these people just need a place to sleep and shower, as they will be at registration the evening of the 26th, competition all day on the 27th, 28th, and 29th, and heading home either late that night or the morning of the 30th.  Feeding them is not required, but some hosts do like to provide grab-and-go breakfast foods (i.e., muffins, bagels, hard-boiled eggs, fruit, etc.).  This is a chance to bless fellow homeschoolers while being blessed by some wonderful people.
Please consider helping in this way, OR, if you're unable, are there people you know well that would enjoy this (even retired friends or empty-nesters)?
Please contact me ASAP so that I can prayerfully place these wonderful people.
Blessings,

Lorrie Walker

OR Right To Life Oratory Contest

This is a special message for high school juniors and seniors:

Researching the issues affecting the beginning and end of life, coming to an educated conclusion on these issues, and learning to articulate them are vital skills--and I’d like to tell you about an upcoming opportunity to do just that:  The Jackson County chapter of Oregon Right to Life is sponsoring an oratory contest.  Think of this as an opportunity to study what is meant when we use the phrase “sanctity of life”, to discuss the issues with your parents, pastors, and friends, and develop the skills to articulate your ideas.

Participants in this competition will prepare and deliver a 5-7 minute speech focusing on abortion, euthanasia, infanticide, or stem cell research.   These are the issues you will be making decisions about and voting on in the very near future.  They are issues foundational to our humanity and it is so important that you use your energy, your intelligence and your voice to speak out for the sanctity of life.

The contest will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 7pm, at Cornerstone Christian Church. Deadline for registration is February 25. Please contact Veronika Comerchero at (541)245-2959 to register. Once you register with your name and address, I will send you a packet with further information.
